Review (#17): Blood Promise (VA #4) by Richelle Mead

Blood Promise (Vampire Academy #4)
by Richelle Mead
Rating: 5/5 stars!
Rose Hathaway's life will never be the same.

The recent attack on St. Vladimir's Academy devastated the entire Moroi world. Many are dead. And, for the few victims carried off by Strigoi, their fates are even worse. A rare tattoo now adorns Rose's neck, a mark that says she's killed far too many Strigoi to count. But only one victim matters . . . Dimitri Belikov. Rose must now choose one of two very different paths: honoring her life's vow to protect Lissa—her best friend and the last surviving Dragomir princess—or, dropping out of the Academy to strike out on her own and hunt down the man she loves. She'll have to go to the ends of the earth to find Dimitri and keep the promise he begged her to make. But the question is, when the time comes, will he want to be saved?

Now, with everything at stake—and worlds away from St. Vladimir's and her unguarded, vulnerable, and newly rebellious best friend—can Rose find the strength to destroy Dimitri? Or, will she sacrifice herself for a chance at eternal love?

WOWZA! These books just keep getting better and better.  So much action, unpredictability, and emotions, oh the emotions!

I loved the new setting that is introduced in this book: Russia.  Never have I given a thought to visiting Russia, or even learning the language, but now I want to so badly!  The cities seem so extravagant and the people seem pretty extraordinary.

I finally got to meet Sydney in this book.  We didn't see her for long really, but I must say, I liked what we did see of her.  She seems like a great person, even a great friend.  But of course, no one can replace Lissa.

And Avery, god, what a BIOTCH!  I didn't really expect what came out of her from the beginning.  She seemed pretty great honestly, but boy oh boy was I proved wrong.

I've also grown to love Adrian more, but I still love Dimitri more, even in his Strigoi form.  He seems almost like the same old Dimitri, almost, not quite though.  I still want Dimitri and Rose to be together so badly! They are just so great together, blahhhh!

I hate that we got to meet Dimitri's family but get ripped completely from them when Rose sets off on her other adventures.  They were all so wonderful!!  Hopefully we get to see them again in the last two books!

ARC Review (#16): Dualed by Elsie Chapman

Dualed (Dualed #1)
by Elsie Chapman
RATING: 3/5 Stars

You or your Alt? Only one will survive.

The city of Kersh is a safe haven, but the price of safety is high. Everyone has a genetic Alternate—a twin raised by another family—and citizens must prove their worth by eliminating their Alts before their twentieth birthday. Survival means advanced schooling, a good job, marriage—life.

Fifteen-year-old West Grayer has trained as a fighter, preparing for the day when her assignment arrives and she will have one month to hunt down and kill her Alt. But then a tragic misstep shakes West’s confidence. Stricken with grief and guilt, she’s no longer certain that she’s the best version of herself, the version worthy of a future. If she is to have any chance of winning, she must stop running not only from her Alt, but also from love . . . though both have the power to destroy her.

Elsie Chapman's suspenseful YA debut weaves unexpected romance into a novel full of fast-paced action and thought-provoking philosophy. When the story ends, discussions will begin about this future society where every adult is a murderer and every child knows there is another out there who just might be better.

"Be the one, be worthy"

Well, I'm not sure how I really feel at the moment.  Maybe I should wait to do this review tomorrow but I just finished the book and I want to get it out of the way.  I wasn't too impressed with the book honestly.  I finished it in one day but it seemed to gruel on and on forever.  I felt like 10 pages lasted forever.

There were times when I felt like there was nothing going on.  Like, the stuff that was being said related in no way to the story whats-so-ever.  Then there were other times that I felt like the action was way too rushed and could of been played out a little more.  This being said, the action scenes did make my heart race and those were the parts where I couldn't stop turning the pages.

I loved the premise of this book though.  Everyone person has an "Alt", an identical twin basically just born to different parents.  Sometime between the ages of 10-20 you are given your assignment, which is to seek out your Alt and kill them.  Whoever lives is the "stronger".  I wish that the book was just written a little better and that I connected with it.

Michael grabbed us both by the arms, as he bolted for the fully closed and barred window, which faced nothing but blacktop and honking cars below. “Don’t worry, we’ve got Jacey. Heal us, love.”

I didn’t have time to think about what that meant. He let go of me briefly as he extended his arm in front of him. The bars snapped and the glass exploded free from the pane in an array of pixilated fragments—colored jewels against the starry sky. “Close your eyes,” Michael said, as he took my arm, and leapt through.
Everything dropped away as I fell. Time had momentarily suspended, and the air around me hollered in my ears. In the distance I heard men yelling, and even the crack of a gunshot—at least it sounded like one—but that commotion was soon drowned out by the low hum of car engines and blasting horns. My senses caught up to me as I saw the pavement closing in.
I was going to die.
“Tuck your chin and roll” Michael’s words sounded faint through the rush in my ears. “It’ll lessen the impact.”
A billion thoughts flushed through my mind faster than I would have thought humanly possible, the main one being: He’s insane. What’s the point? Even so, in a last-ditch effort to survive, I closed my eyes and bent my chin to my chest, just as the ground met me.
The bones in my upper back cracked with the impact, along with a stinging roar of pain. I felt my legs bounce, as I rolled out onto the blacktop. A buzz sounded in my head. I couldn’t move. The sound of a car skidding, its tires ripping with the smell of burnt rubber, shuddered through me, and then everything went white.

Excerpt:I feel Colt laugh, and he looks down into my face. That’s when he seems to realize what I’ve been acutely aware of for the last several minutes—our bodies are pressed together. “It’s awesome, yeah?” he says. “Adrenaline rush.” “Yeah,” I breathe. “I guess.” I’m not sure if he’s going to kiss me until he does. His mouth covers mine, and energy mixes with the alcohol flooding my body. Our tongues slide together, and I grip his shirt so I don’t collapse.  Every single bit of this is wrong, and there’s no way I’m stopping it. It’s back, that good feeling. The sadness has been pushed out again, and in its place is this rush, this rush of adrenaline like Colt said.  He pulls back and smiles at me. “We’re going to start dating. Now. You’re my partner in crime.”

Mary is part Vietnamese. Carter is a complete jerk. Normally, they don't talk much.

But when Mary's in an accident on the way to school one morning, Carter nearly dies saving her life. The doctors say his chances of living are slim, and Mary's feeling the full weight of survivor's guilt.

However, Carter's back at school in a matter of days, as if nothing had happened. Although, he is a little "glitchy," and he's developed a sudden and intense interest in Mary. She thinks he's suffering from major brain trauma from the accident. Or that he's been possessed.

As it so happens, Carter really is possessed. And the thing controlling him is having the time of its life learning to be human.

Featuring a diverse cast of characters, RADIANT is a funny "paranormal-lite" story about being human, being in love, and being healed.

EXCERPT!
A voice called to her. It seemed close, and it was getting louder as the pain got sharper. "Hey? Hey! Are you all right?" it asked.

Mary blinked several times before she could finally see again. She was in the middle of the street. The cars had stopped and people on the sidewalk were staring.

"Are you all right?" the voice asked again. It was coming from a man wearing some type of uniform.

"What…?" Mary tried to say more, but her voice suddenly stopped working.

"Careful," he said as he helped her up. "Looks like you can move all right. Here, let's get you out of the street."
He helped her over to the sidewalk. "Stay here. Someone's calling the paramedics." And then he was gone.
Mary sat there, still in a daze. She started noticing familiar stuff all over the ground—an open book bag, books, folders, unused tampons, a shoe, and an apple with one bite mark. Her eyes followed the trail of debris to a brilliant red sports car, half of which was smashed in by a city bus.
What had happened? Mary studied the whole scene, trying to puzzle together the pieces. Then it dawned on her. The car had hit her. Not intentionally. She had run in front of the bus without knowing it. It was about to hit her, but the car had gotten in the way first. It had saved her life.
Mary thought about looking in the car. Then her feet sorta moved without her meaning them to, and she made her way to the passenger door. She recognized the person inside. Carter. She knew his last name, but she couldn't think of what it was. He was slumped over the seat with blood oozing all over his face. His eyes were shut.
Mary knocked on the window. The tears in her hand stung.
No response.
She beat the window with her fist.
Still nothing.
Mary stared. She couldn't believe it. On any other day, she wouldn't exchange two words with this guy. Just yesterday, he nearly mowed down an elderly couple while driving out of the school lot. Mary had secretly wished he'd be taught a lesson. But she didn't mean this.
She tried the door handle, but it was still locked. Suddenly, Carter's eyes flickered opened. He looked straight at her.
Mary gasped and pressed her face against the window.
Carter's eyes closed.
She stared at him, waiting for him to open them again. Waiting for any sign of life. But he was still like he was before.
Hands suddenly took hold of Mary, pulling her away from the car. Her feet moved on their own again. Someone was yelling "Miss" a lot. Parts of her brain found other noises too, like sirens, voices, beeping, and other things. The hands directed her to sit on something hard and cold.
"Miss? Can you hear me? Can you tell me your name?"
Mary didn't answer. She still hadn't found her voice, and her mind was fuzzy, too.
"Is that her bag there? Does she have a driver's license?"
A different person spoke. "No license, but I found a student ID. Her name's Mary Phan. She's seventeen and a junior here at Lewis Prep."
Mary heard a third voice. "I just talked with some of the kids on the sidewalk. One of them said her mom's a nurse at the memorial hospital."
"Find out how to contact the mom. Anyone see what happened?"
"Cops are questioning witnesses right now. Looks like she ran in front of the bus. It would've nailed her if that sportster hadn't gotten in the way."
"Anything on the bus or the driver of the car?"
"Everyone on the bus looks fine. The car belongs to a kid named Carter Maxwell. Also a junior." A sigh. "I wouldn't hold my breath. He looks really bad in there."
Mary tuned out everything else. All sights. All sounds. The only thing she could see in her mind was Carter staring at her.
