Review (8): Frostbite by Richelle Mead

Title: Frostbite (Vampire Academy #2)
Author: Richelle Mead
Rating: 4.5/5
Overview: Rose loves Dimitri, Dimitri might love Tasha, and Mason would die to be with Rose...

It’s winter break at St. Vladimir’s, but Rose is feeling anything but festive. A massive Strigoi attack has put the school on high alert, and now the Academy’s crawling with Guardians—including Rose’s hard-hitting mother, Janine Hathaway. And if hand-to-hand combat with her mom wasn’t bad enough, Rose’s tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason’s got a huge crush on her, and Rose keeps getting stuck in Lissa’s head while she’s making out with her boyfriend, Christian! The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy’s not taking any risks... This year, St. Vlad’s annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.

But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only create the illusion of safety. When three friends run away in an offensive move against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them. But heroism rarely comes without a price.

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS FROM THE FIRST BOOK IN THE SERIES!!!

I am going to have some serious bruises by the end of this series.  I've been kicking myself for not starting this series since the start of the first book.  I cannot believe that I doubted that I would like this series.  I loved the first book, and this second one is even better!

I really have to say that I wish I was able to meet Rose and be in the world she is.  She is such a kick ass person and I relate to her so well.  I would give anything to actually see this place.  It sounds incredible.  And the guys, oh boy, the guys.  Mason was such a sweetheart.  He is so funny and awesome.  Dimitri is that guy that every girl wants to have in their life, to help them on the way through life.  And Adrian.  I don't really even know how to describe him because he was just introduced to us in the book and I'm not really sure how I feel about him yet.

There is a lot of side stories in this because there is still a lot to learn about Rose's new world, but I love learning all this information about this amazing place.  The action in this book is non stop and there is almost one action scene in every chapter!

I cried at the end.  Just with everything that happens between Rose and her mom and between Rose and Dimitri.  I'm a big baby when it comes to books lately and I'm not sure why!!

This series is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone.

Review (7): What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang

Title: What's Left of Me
Author: Kat Zhang
Rating: 4/5
Overview: I should not exist. But I do.

Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else—two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren’t they settling? Why isn’t one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t . . .

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable-hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet . . . for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything

This book had such an interesting premise and really makes you think.  You are born with two souls, but eventually, one will just fade away and disappear.  But if that doesn't happen, you are considered a hybrid, dangerous.  And Addie and Eva are one of those hybrids.

Eva is the main character even though she is considered the recessive soul while Addie is the dominant.  Addie makes them walk and talk while Eva is just sort of floating inside of her.  They both can talk to each other in their head.  It was weird have it through Eva's view because I would sometimes confuse her with Addie and have to go back and reread.  It's especially confusing at the end when Eva takes some sort of dominance.

It was also hard to get used to the "we" and "us" that the book kept using.  I would always have to think who was "we" or "us", but you get used to it after awhile.

Addie irritated me at some points, she comes off as selfish and childish.  I also hated when Eva and Addie would fight (they do it often throughout the whole book). I definitely felt bad for Eva though.  Being trapped in a body you can't control?  That has to be hard.

All in all, I loved the book.  Kat does a great job at providing us with info of this foreign world without overwhelming us with information.  She does a great job letting us know bit by bit what this place we know nothing about, is about.  The ending had my heart thumping and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.  There really isn't a "love interest" in this book but there is a minor one, but love isn't the focus of this book, and I like that, a lot.

Review (6): Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Title: Cinder (Lunar Chronicles #1)
Author: Marissa Meyer
Rating: 5/5
Overview: Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. . . .

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future

I was not expecting to like this book at all.  I had seen it around a lot and even picked it up a few times at my local library, but I could not bring myself to read it.  But then, I don't remember who's review it was, but I read it, and I was like, Okay, I have to read this.  And I am so glad that I did.

The first two chapters for me were a little hard to get through, it was a lot of new stuff I've never really heard of thrown at me at once.  So, undoubtedly,  I was about to put the book down and think that I shouldn't have picked it up.  But I continue reading and all of the sudden, it just pulled me in and I couldn't stop reading.

Cinder is such a great main character and we really get to know her.  She is such a relatable character and you can definitely experience everyone of her emotions yourself through Meyer's writing.  Prince Kai is another main character but we don't really learn as much about him because there are only a few chapters that are written in his POV.

The plot contained so much action at the end that I couldn't stop reading at the end.  Let's just stay I stayed up way past my bedtime reading this book.

The end was also such a BIG cliffhanger and I love cliffhangers!  I cannot wait for Scarlet to come out!
