Smith?” she barked at me. Yes, Smith is my last name. Unique, I know.
“Yes, Mrs. Jordan?” I asked in the sweetest voice I had.
“You,” she pointed at Becky, “hit the showers.”
Becky wiggled her fingers at me in a little wave. On the way to the locker room, she stubbed her toe. Becky hopped precariously on one foot while massaging the other. I was dying to see her walk a runway in heels after that.
I eyed the gym teacher. I’d been out of the country for a long time, but I was quite sure mullets went out of style about twenty years ago. Someone forgot to give her the memo on that. If Highlights Gone Wrong was a reality show, surely she’d be on it.
“You haven’t signed up for a sports team yet.” Mrs. Jordan dropped next to me on the bleachers, hiking up her pants as she sat. Legs spread wide, she rested her elbow on her knees, put her chin in her hands, and stared at me.
“Sports team?” I repeated.
“There’s nothing in your file about playing an instrument, right?”
I’d learned elementary didjeridu during a quick stint in Australia. I couldn’t imagine they had a section for that here. I shook my head.
“You are required to participate in an extra-curricular activity. Marching band is out. What skills do you have?”
I thought quickly. I didn’t want to end up on an awful team. Too short for volleyball. Too slow for track. No penis for football. What did that leave me?
“I am a black belt in taekwondo,” I said, sure that I could get a spot on their martial arts team. I could probably disable them all with a glance. I sat up straighter, my shoulders back.
Mrs. Jordan’s eyes widened. “Taekwondo? You beat people up?”
“Well, kind of,” I said, puffing up my chest with pride. Not many people would suspect tiny me to be dangerous. I liked that. “It’s more self-defense than attack strategies, but if pressed, yes, I can hurt someone. I have this amazing jump-kick combination that never fails to knock people off their feet. I also learned how to flip over someone’s kick to avoid being hit. It’s really amazing.”
I stopped when I realized Mrs. Jordan was staring at me. Yes, I was babbling. Yes, maybe I sounded a tad like Becky. But hey, how often did I get to discuss my martial arts experience with a fellow fitness enthusiast? Mrs. Jordan didn’t have an ounce of fat on her. Obviously she would understand the amazing things the human body can accomplish when pushed.
“Perfect,” she said. “Then it’s decided.” A smile spread across Mrs. Jordan’s face. It echoed on mine. Not only was I being invited to join their martial arts team, but I bet she was about to make me captain.
“I’m honored,” I said.
“Wonderful!” Mrs. Jordan clapped me on the back. “You’ll be a great addition to our cheerleading squad.”

ARC Review (#28): Right of Way by Lauren Barnholdt

Right of Way
by Lauren Barnholdt
Expected Publication: July 9th, 2013
Source: ATW Arc Tours

Here are Peyton and Jace, meeting on vacation. Click! It’s awesome, it’s easy, it’s romantic. This is the real deal.

Unless it isn’t. Because when you’re in love, you don’t just stop calling one day. And you don’t keep secrets. Or lie. And when your life starts falling apart, you’re supposed to have the other person to lean on.Here are Peyton and Jace again, broken up but thrown together on a road trip. One of them is lying about the destination. One of them is pretending not to be leaving something behind. And neither of them is prepared for what’s coming on the road ahead

Road trips.  Who doesn't love reading about them? I know I sure do.  They are one of my favorite plot lines out there.  There are so many places in this world to go and see so it never gets boring!  I must admit, I've never read Two Way Street.  But I plan on buying it along with my copy of this!

I loved being able to see from both Jace's and Peyton's point of view.  I also like how Barnholdt alternated from the past time to the current trip.  It definitely helps the reader to learn all about Jace and Peyton a lot more.

I must say I loved Peyton.  Yes, at some times she was whiny, but what teenager isn't? And after finding out why she wants to run away, well I can't really blame her.  If that happened to me, I'd be a little more than whiney.  I must say I didn't fall head over heels with Jace but I must say him and Peyton together were caaaauuuuuttteeeeeeee!   They were fantastic together.  I found myself always laughing with them or feeling any other emotion.

There were some times in the book though that I felt like we should of focused a little more on the road trip.  I mean the road trip only truly last twos days and I was kind of disappointed by that.  I wanted them to travel a little farther, do a little more things.  But all in all, I loved this book, and I can't wait to get my own copy.  It's a great YA contemporary that every girl needs to read.

Excerpt

A young servant girl entered the throne room and padded across the flagstone floor, carrying a delicate metal cage in her trembling hands. She remained silent while waiting for her next command. Draven slowly stood and glided over to the pedestal to his left, his black robe trailing behind him. He inhaled a deep breath and stared at the empty gilded cage that sat before him. He suddenly swung his arm at it, sending it flying across the spacious room, and it crashed loudly against the floor. The servant gently rested the new cage in its place and swiftly fled the room.
Draven sat down and leaned back into his throne made of solid gold. His gaze bore down on the man cowering before him. “You have two Elementals tucked safely away behind your walls. I want them.”
“I am afraid that is a matter out of my control.” The petrified man sat quite still, purposely avoiding Draven’s scrutiny.
A buzzing noise vibrated from the cage. A pixie fluttered her tiny wings, flying frantically and bouncing off the bars. Annoyed, Draven shot silver sparks out of his fingertips, aiming at the pixie. She was quick and barely dodged them.
“You have the ability to free them.” Draven’s lips curled into a sneer.
“I am flattered, sir, that you think I have the ability to grant your wish, but I must regretfully inform you that you are mistaken.”
With the flick of his index finger, Draven magically opened the cage door. The pixie tucked her wings against her back and pressed herself against the far wall of her cell.
“It’s okay, my little darling. Please come to me,” Draven said to the pixie. She took tiny, hesitant steps until she reached the edge and peered out the door. He turned his attention back to the man. “I am truly sorry to hear that.”
The pixie took off in flight from her cage and zipped toward an open window. Draven raised his open hand and summoned her to him, and she involuntarily flew in his direction. She let out a squeak as Draven swatted her to the ground; she lay unmoving, knocked out cold.
“What if I offered you your deepest desire?”
“There is only one thing I would wish for and I am afraid not even you could grant that wish. The only thing I want in this world is my wife, and she’s dead. There is nothing beyond that that could persuade me to help you.”
The pixie stirred, slowly regaining consciousness. After a minute of watching the tortured pixie attempting to flee to safety, Draven shot sparks out of his hand, hitting the pixie in the back. She spiraled to the ground, and what was left of her wings sizzled to ash from the electric shock.
“What if I could bring your wife back? Could you be persuaded to help me then?” Draven walked over to the pixie and waved his hand inches above the dead creature. A glittering wave of magic washed over her body, restoring her strength and beauty. She tried for her freedom one last time, and inches from the window Draven summoned her, sending her straight back to her cage.
“I’m listening.”

Actually he has much more interesting ideas for Jillian and her bedposts, but his student visa's set expiration date means he can't promise her forever.
